Prospect Park is 526 acres of trees and fields, waterways, paths, ballfields and Brooklyn’s only forest. Visited by more than 8 million people each year, it is a center of social activity and recreation for both Brooklynites and guests. We are honored to wear the name “Prospect Park” on our uniforms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The mission of Outdoor Service Guides is to foster an inclusive environment where individuals of all ages develop outdoor skills, connect across generations, and engage in community service. Everybody Scouts OSG believes that all people and all families should have an equal place in the scouting movement. We welcome scouts and their families as they come to us, and we will do our best to make scouting and its activities accessible to every child or adult who wishes to join. We welcome everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion (or no religion), or other differentiating factors. We believe that scouting is for everybody. We welcome those who have scouted a long time and those who have never tried scouting before joining us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sections Gallery - What is Traditional Scouting</image:title>
<image:caption>The term “Traditional Scouting” has a different meaning outside the United States, where it refers to a “back to basics” movement that rejects the world-wide trend to “modernize” Scouting in order to appeal to imagined wider slices of fleeting popular and commercial youth cultures, and returns Scouting to a scheme intentionally based on Baden-Powell’s own model of Scouting. Traditional Scouting is not historical re-enactment, but for the most part an attempt to present Scouting as the game that was played prior to the 1960s. For all practical purposes in most of the former British Empire (with minor national variations due to climate and the influence of native cultures), this was how it had been played by Scouting’s inventor, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, while he was still alive. In Traditional Scouting, the only changes in the program are for reasons of advances in a) health and safety practices, b) environmental concerns, and c) light weight camping technologies. The Scouting movement began “modernizing” starting in the 1960’s with the British Boy Scout Association, which commissioned a number of studies to determine how best to appeal to an imagined wider demographic and changing youth culture. This series of studies was picked up by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in 1970, which began the introduction of the new and improved Scouting Program in America in 1972. These changes saw a removal of most of the scoutcraft and woodcraft skills and requirements in the handbook and a complete move away form the patrol method and other Scouting methods which were part of Baden-Powell’s original program. For these reasons, among many other changes to the Scouting program not mentioned here, traditional scouting programs began forming in the early 1970’s, starting with the Baden- Powell Scouting Association in the UK in 1971. Other traditional scouting programs on or affiliated with the BPSA-UK now exist in Canada, Australia, Ireland and many other countries. In the United States, Baden-Powell Scouting started in 2006, founded by members of the US Rover’s and other interested scouters. In 2008, B-P Scouting was renamed and incorporated as the Baden-Powell Service Association.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - brooklyn scouts</image:title>
<image:caption>Brooklyn Scouts is an inclusive organization dedicated to providing a “back to Basics” Scouting program to Brooklyn youth and their families. We welcome everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, class, ability, religion (or no religion), or other differentiating factors. We are part of the Outdoor Service Guides (OSG), a national volunteer-run Scouting organization. Brooklyn Scouts has five age-based levels of participation (Chipmunks, Otters, Timberwolves, Pathfinders and Rovers), all of which are co-ed and include participants and leaders of all genders. Brooklyn Scouts (and their families) participate in camping trips, nature and culture outings, service projects, fundraising and regular meetings. The curriculum for all Scouts includes environmental conservation, wildlife recognition, woodcraft, orienteering, first aid/safety and camp skills.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - what is “back to basics” scouting?</image:title>
<image:caption>The term “Back-to-Basics” Scouting” refers to a focus on the original pillars of Scouting: a love of nature, and a drive to help others. These are the foundations of Brooklyn Scouts, where we seek to challenge our Scouts in woodcraft and nature skills through our outdoors focus. We also engage in service projects, from trash pickup to food drives. Our “back to basics” focus also encourages our Scouts to bond via “patrol based Scouting” in small groups of 6 or less (Otter Dens, Timberwolf Sixes, Pathfinder Patrols). By working in small teams of their peers, Scouts learn independence, resilience and problem solving as a group.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - PARENT/GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERING AND PARTICIPATION</image:title>
<image:caption>The regular troop activities, organization of camping trips, community outreach and fundraisers depend on parent and guardian involvement. By being 100% volunteer, we are able to keep Scouting available to all income levels. Brooklyn Scouts is a Family oriented activity, an opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children, helping their community and learning about the outdoors. No previous Scout knowledge necessary! We welcome all skills and talents besides our regular roles in accounting, fundraising, admin, legal, technology and leadership roles. For more information, contact your Troop or Section leader.</image:caption>
